What H13 means
Under the European EN 1822 standard, a H13 filter captures at least 99.95% of particles at the most-penetrating size (~0.1–0.3 µm). H14 is stricter (99.995%). These are lab-certified grades — a genuine claim, unlike "HEPA-type".
True HEPA vs "HEPA-type"
- True HEPA / H13 — meets a defined efficiency at a defined particle size. Trust it.
- "HEPA-type" / "HEPA-like" — marketing with no guaranteed grade; efficiency can be far lower.
H13 vs MERV-13 — the part nobody explains
H13 has a higher single-pass efficiency, but it's also denser, so it resists airflow. In a small sealed unit that means less air moved per minute. MERV-13 captures ~93% per pass but flows far more air, so a high-airflow box delivers more total clean air to the room — often more than a small H13 unit, and more quietly.
What matters at home is clean-air delivery over time = efficiency × airflow × hours run. For most households, high-airflow MERV-13 wins on real-world results and cost. H13 earns its place where single-pass capture is critical — clinical settings, or severe immune vulnerability.
